In 'Lesson of The Smiths', I've always wondered, isn't it pronounced 'eh pit oh me' instead of 'eh pit oam'.

But surely the author is mispronouncing it on purpose, to make a wry comment about his own pretension in using the word at such a young age?

Otherwise it'd mean he got it wrong ages ago and can't go back and change it now, and that would be MADNESS!
